Goals & Objectives

The CoPlace Artists in Residence Program is catalyzing positive social, economic, and environmental change in San Diego’s Logan Heights neighborhood by commissioning talented artists and promoting tactical urbanism. Constructed from repurposed shipping containers, 21 brand new units will provide housing for the Artist in Residence program, bringing together hundreds of artists across multiple domains — a rotating cast of recognized rising stars and established names from the local, national, and international art scene, to live, work, and co-create over the initial 12-18 month project period. The creative products that will be made possible via your support are in anticipation of the 2024 World Design Capital Festival, which will be dually hosted by Tijuana and San Diego. Creatives from the San Diego, California and Baja areas will work alongside creatives from across the USA, Mexico, and around the world, engaging in various forms of artistic expression that empower them, and engage Logan Heights and its residents, e.g., via public and participatory art, and community-based urban gardening. Your donation will be used primarily to support: ° The initial round of public art projects in Logan Heights ° Housing, supplies, and stipends for the Artists In Residence ° Preliminary tactical urbanism work, guided by members of the team who published Maker City (www.makercity.com) ° Our initial launch event

Our Story

The Artists in Residency Program is being led by the CoPlace Consortium — a group with a proven track record of transforming idle properties into thriving arts and entertainment destinations — and Gray Area, a San Francisco-based countercultural hub catalyzing creative action for social transformation. CoPlace’s mission is to transform communities while propelling economic growth by strengthening alliances among municipalities, community leaders, and investors. The team’s passion is in creating spaces that can serve neighborhoods’ current residents while drawing in the extended San Diego community. CoPlace has completed multiple socially and economically impactful projects, which have received awards and garnered international attention from industry, government, and academic groups. CoPlace emphasizes expression through art. When communities express themselves artistically, people think creatively about how they can contribute to their own lives and those of their neighbors. About Gray Area Gray Area is a 21st-century countercultural hub catalyzing creative action for social transformation. Our mission is to cultivate, sustain, and amplify a community of creative practitioners who apply antidisciplinary practice at the intersection of art and technology towards engaging with the complex challenges facing our world. Through public events, education, incubation, and research, we maintain a platform that enables creators of diverse backgrounds and perspectives to transcend boundaries within deep artistic collaboration and gain agency to impact the world through category-defying work.
